Lothian Disability Schools Footy Event Hits the Back of the Net

Lothian Disability Schools Footy Event Hits the Back of the Net

This year’s football participatory event switched venues from HW University to Saltire Soccer Centre due to major refurbishments at the Riccarton Campus and the new Midlothian host really scored with the young people.

The format of the event allows the young players to experience the sport of football in an environment very much focused on participation.  The first session provides the opportunity to try five fun skill stations focusing on shooting, passing and dribbling, all led by experienced Scottish FA coaches.  The format allows for adaptations in the skills and drills to suit the ability of the young person, which ranged from beginner to competent players, and hopefully provides a positive introduction to the sport for some.  The second session encourages the young people to put their newly acquired skills into practice and play small sided friendly games against their peers from across the Lothian region – promoting social interaction as well as developing their technique.

In total, the event attracted 76 young people from across three local authorities with schools from East Lothian (Musselburgh GS), Edinburgh (Pilrig Park, Prospect Bank PS, Royal Blind School & Woodlands) and West Lothian (Cedarbank & Pinewood) attending the event at its new home.  In addition to the delivery from the SFA coaches, the event also benefited from the presence of 7 senior pupils from nearby Newbattle High School who supported the pupils through the skills and drills session by providing encouragement in a fun and enthusiastic manner.  The Midlothian Active Schools team were also on hand on the day to provide their support, in addition to their hard work in the lead up to the event.

Coaches from East Lothian disability football team Tranent Colts also supported delivery and provided valuable experience to the event, highlighting the regular opportunities that are available in the surrounding area.  Saltire Soccer Centre also plays host to a regular disability football session delivered through community club Dalkeith Thistle.  If you are interested to find out more about football opportunities in the area, please get in touch with Neal Herbert on 0131 475 2364 or This email address is being protected from spambots. Disability Snowsport UK - Hillend Sessions, Midlothian

Disability Snowsport UK - Hillend Sessions, Midlothian

Disability Snowsport UK is a charity with a mission to enable anybody, regardless of their disability, to take part in and enjoy the thrill of snowsports.  The charity has existed for over 30 years, and has recently received a donation enabling us to begin to deliver ski lessons at Midlothian Snowsports Centre in the Pentland Hills.

The ski school has adaptive trained instructors and specialised equipment available to assist people to learn to ski both standing and sitting.  One of the first skiers to attend a lesson at the new DSUK ski school was Charlie, an 8 year old boy who was born with cerebral palsy.  Charlie learnt to ski using a piece of equipment called a biski, which is steered by leaning from side to side with the help of an instructor.  After his lesson, Charlie’s mum told DSUK that ‘Charlie absolutely loved the skiing and we will definitely be doing it again’.  Other skiers have reported benefits to their co-ordination, concentration and sociability as well as simply enjoying the new experience.

DSUK can deliver both group and individual lessons to people with physical, cognitive and sensory disabilities.  Please contact Louisa at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for more information, or call 08455219338 to book a lesson.

Great 2014 for Swimmer Scott Quin

Great 2014 for Swimmer Scott Quin

It has been an incredible month for East of Scotland swimmer Scott Quin who has proven to be amongst the very best in world swimming in the S14 classification for athletes with an intellectual disability.

The Warrender Baths athlete was part of a winning Scotland team who attended the British Gas Disability Championships in Manchester in November and was one of nine East of Scotland swimmers who contributed to Scotland’s first success in ten years.  On a personal level, Quin was in fine form as he took the Men’s SB14 100m breaststroke World Record, in a time of 1:07.38.  This time is considerably faster than the qualifying time of 1.11.00 for the London Paralympic Games 2012, which Quin narrowly missed.  Forward two years and it is clear he is on an upward curve and he is now a member of UK Sports World Class Podium programme.

The talented swimmer continued this great form into the Scottish National Short Course Championships at the Royal Commonwealth Pool over the weekend.  Competing in the men’s 100m breaststroke, the Mighty Quin posted a new World best time of 106.92 in the heats, breaking his own World Record!

It is clear the 24 year old has excelled in recent months and we look forward to watching his progression towards the Paralympic Games in Rio 2016.
