Lothian Disability Schools Footy Event Hits the Back of the Net

Lothian Disability Schools Footy Event Hits the Back of the Net

This year’s football participatory event switched venues from HW University to Saltire Soccer Centre due to major refurbishments at the Riccarton Campus and the new Midlothian host really scored with the young people.

The format of the event allows the young players to experience the sport of football in an environment very much focused on participation.  The first session provides the opportunity to try five fun skill stations focusing on shooting, passing and dribbling, all led by experienced Scottish FA coaches.  The format allows for adaptations in the skills and drills to suit the ability of the young person, which ranged from beginner to competent players, and hopefully provides a positive introduction to the sport for some.  The second session encourages the young people to put their newly acquired skills into practice and play small sided friendly games against their peers from across the Lothian region – promoting social interaction as well as developing their technique.

In total, the event attracted 76 young people from across three local authorities with schools from East Lothian (Musselburgh GS), Edinburgh (Pilrig Park, Prospect Bank PS, Royal Blind School & Woodlands) and West Lothian (Cedarbank & Pinewood) attending the event at its new home.  In addition to the delivery from the SFA coaches, the event also benefited from the presence of 7 senior pupils from nearby Newbattle High School who supported the pupils through the skills and drills session by providing encouragement in a fun and enthusiastic manner.  The Midlothian Active Schools team were also on hand on the day to provide their support, in addition to their hard work in the lead up to the event.

Coaches from East Lothian disability football team Tranent Colts also supported delivery and provided valuable experience to the event, highlighting the regular opportunities that are available in the surrounding area.  Saltire Soccer Centre also plays host to a regular disability football session delivered through community club Dalkeith Thistle.  If you are interested to find out more about football opportunities in the area, please get in touch with Neal Herbert on 0131 475 2364 or This email address is being protected from spambots. Lothian Schools Disability Badminton Festival

Lothian Schools Disability Badminton Festival

Once again, Meadowmill sports centre welcomed a number of young people from across the Lothian region for the annual Schools Disability Badminton Festival held on Wednesday 30th September.

The event provides school aged young people the opportunity to try badminton, introducing them to the sport in a fun and engaging way.  Around 40 young people enjoyed the half day event, which was again delivered by Lothian Disability Badminton Club (LDBC) coaches and volunteers, as the club continue to strongly support the events within the LDS calendar of events.  Players from the club, Ross Foley and Colin Leslie led various aspects of the session before providing the young participants with an excellent demonstration of Para Badminton as the two played a small match – displaying the skills they recently showcased at the World Para Badminton Championships in England, where they proudly represented Scotland.

Christine Black, East Lothian Badminton Development Officer, took the overall lead on the session as schools from Edinburgh (Kaimes, Pilrig Park and Towerbank PS) and West Lothian (Cedarbank) travelled to the region and enjoyed a fun packed morning of Badminton with some showing real potential as players for the future.

Numbers Continue to Rise at the LDS Swim Gala

Numbers Continue to Rise at the LDS Swim Gala

Mercat Gait Pool in Prestonpans, East Lothian was the venue for this year's Lothian Disability Sport Autumn Swim Gala , providing swimmers from across the region and further afield the opportunity to try and better times and performances in the pool.  Lothian were extremely well represented through local clubs Lothian Racers, Lothian Waves, Livingston & District Dolphins, Loanhead Swim Team, ELST, Enjoy ASC and Mercat Greats.  Additionally, LDS welcomed other branches from across the country with the Borders (Borders Baracudas) and Stirling (Arion Swim Club, Stirling Swim & Stirling SC) completing the 75 swimmer strong entry.

The gala was able to provide some further competition for athletes who had just returned from the CPISRA World Games in Nottingham  (Stirling athletes Mairin Savage and Sam Agnew) and the Special Olympic World Games in LA (Loanhead swimmer Michelle Moran) - all three athletes were able to medal at their respective Championships, with Michelle Moran claiming the first medal of the games for the Great British Team.  In addition to these established swimmers, the competition provided a first step into disability swimming for many young people - highlighting the good work that clubs, local leisure organisations and Scottish Disability Sport have been doing recently through the facilitation of development days in East and West Lothian.  Enjoy Leisure (East Lothian) held a development day back in June, which has helped boost the number of swimmers from 5 to 17 in just six months at their ASN session on a Tuesday evening at Musselburgh Sports Centre.  There is lots of excellent work being done by clubs throughout the region and this is now being reflected by the number of swimmers accessing competitive opportunities.

Another swimmer who has recently made big strides in the pool is East Lothian Swim Team's (ELST) Christian Buchanan.  The youngster from Tranent has worked extremely hard over the previous 12 months making the transition from Musselburgh Amateur Swim Squad and Lothian Racers to the ELST and is now completing 17 hours training per week - in addition to making the difficult step from primary to secondary school.  Christian has also recently been included in the Scottish Swimming Talent Programme 2015/2016  and will travel to Manchester next month for the Sainsbury's School Games.  A great year for the East Lothian swimmer and for this reason, Christian was chosen as the recipient of the Mark Headden Memorial Trophy for the most improved swimmer over the last 12 months.
