Lothian Disability Schools Footy Event Hits the Back of the Net

Lothian Disability Schools Footy Event Hits the Back of the Net

This year’s football participatory event switched venues from HW University to Saltire Soccer Centre due to major refurbishments at the Riccarton Campus and the new Midlothian host really scored with the young people.

The format of the event allows the young players to experience the sport of football in an environment very much focused on participation.  The first session provides the opportunity to try five fun skill stations focusing on shooting, passing and dribbling, all led by experienced Scottish FA coaches.  The format allows for adaptations in the skills and drills to suit the ability of the young person, which ranged from beginner to competent players, and hopefully provides a positive introduction to the sport for some.  The second session encourages the young people to put their newly acquired skills into practice and play small sided friendly games against their peers from across the Lothian region – promoting social interaction as well as developing their technique.

In total, the event attracted 76 young people from across three local authorities with schools from East Lothian (Musselburgh GS), Edinburgh (Pilrig Park, Prospect Bank PS, Royal Blind School & Woodlands) and West Lothian (Cedarbank & Pinewood) attending the event at its new home.  In addition to the delivery from the SFA coaches, the event also benefited from the presence of 7 senior pupils from nearby Newbattle High School who supported the pupils through the skills and drills session by providing encouragement in a fun and enthusiastic manner.  The Midlothian Active Schools team were also on hand on the day to provide their support, in addition to their hard work in the lead up to the event.

Coaches from East Lothian disability football team Tranent Colts also supported delivery and provided valuable experience to the event, highlighting the regular opportunities that are available in the surrounding area.  Saltire Soccer Centre also plays host to a regular disability football session delivered through community club Dalkeith Thistle.  If you are interested to find out more about football opportunities in the area, please get in touch with Neal Herbert on 0131 475 2364 or This email address is being protected from spambots. Powerchair Football in Edinburgh and the Lothian Region

Powerchair Football in Edinburgh and the Lothian Region

Powerchair Football in Scotland has grown rapidly since 2012 with a number of clubs being created and offering opportunities for Powerchair participants to compete in sport and meet their peers in a fun environment. At this current time there is no Powerchair provision in Edinburgh or surrounding local authorities with the closest opportunity being Dundee.

We have already identified some potential participants across Edinburgh’s schools but we are looking to consult with as wide a group of potential participants as possible and therefore at this stage we are just asking parents/carers and children and young people to let us know if they like to take up this opportunity to gauge if there is sufficient interest.  The opportunity will be open to individuals from Edinburgh and the Lothian region so if you are interested in hearing more about getting involved then please get in touch.

We have consulted with already established clubs across Scotland to assess the benefits for the players who currently take part in Powerchair Football and players have fed back the many positives of participation in the sport:

  • Feeling part of a team
  • Improved wheelchair skills which are transferable and benefit everyday life
  • Making new friends
  • Improved confidence

Lothian Schools Triumph at Toryglen

Lothian Schools Triumph at Toryglen

Scottish Disability Sport  7-a-side Championships

Lothian Schools put in an impressive performance at the SDS National Championships on Wednesday 16th - claiming victory in the Junior Band B Division after defeating Carrongrange of Forth Valley 3-2 in a closely contested final.

The Lothian team comprised of players who performed well throughout the previous school year, with the winners (West Calder) and runners up (Woodlands) of the School League making up the squad of 8 players.  The Lothian youngsters recorded a hard fought 0-0 draw in their first group match (Carrongrange) before recording impressive victories against Letham A (6-0) and Claremont Colts (9-0) to proceed as group winners, leading to another match with 4th place finishers in the group - Claremont Colts.  Again the Lothian side were too strong for the East Kilbride youngsters and booked their place in the final.

The final saw Declan Murray (Woodlands) put his side in front from the penalty spot before Carrongrange levelled the scores at 1-1.  Lothian then took the lead for a second time with a goal from West Cader's Callum Race before Murray put through his own net to level the scores once more and setting up a tense finish to the match.  The match was settled by an excellent finish from Steven Meek (West Calder) and Lothian were crowned Band B Champions.  The Lothian squad of players can be found below -

Mike Eusepi (Woodlands)

Declan Murray (Woodlands)

Matthew Power (Woodlands)

Ben Thompson (Woodlands)

Dalkeith CYP's Disability Officer selected as Regional Winner

Dalkeith Miners CYP Disability Officer Steven Williams has been selected as Regional Winner 2015 in this year's SFA Grassroots Awards in the category of Disability Football.

In partnership with McDonald's and the Sunday Mail, the SFA Awards recognise the value individuals such as Steven bring to football and their communities.

Steven devotes a huge amount of time and effort to our football club in his role as Disability Officer as well as running a team. His involvement means that school kids who might not otherwise get a chance to play football have that opportunity.

Tony Begg, Club Development Manager for the Scottish FA South East Region said, 'The annual regional grassroots awards, in partnership with McDonalds and The Sunday Mail, is a chance for us to reward and highlight the great work that is done by volunteers across the region and to extend our thanks to all those who commit so much time, energy and passion to our game. I am delighted for Steven that he has won this award, he gives a tremendous amount to disability football and he is a worthy winner'.

The awards ceremony will be on Saturday 29th August at Easter Road Stadium ahead of the Hibs v Raith Rovers match that day.

Following his selection as Regional Winner, Steven will now go forward within this category to the national awards panel with the potential of being a National Winner, to be awarded at Hampden Park in September.

Scottish FA School League - Match Day 4

Scottish FA School League - Match Day 4

This season's 7-a-side league for school aged players with a learning disability drew to a close on Friday 15th May, with the finale bringing an extremely tense finish for two of the teams involved.

The lead at the top of the league had swapped hands on a number of occasions between West Calder HS and Woodlands throughout the season and the scene was set for a gripping finish at Albyn Park, West Lothian.  The West Lothian and Edinburgh sides were tied at the top of the league with 21 points after 3 match days and the winners were decided in the very last match of the 2014/2015 season.  The atmosphere could have been cut with a knife during the opening 10 minutes of the match as both team knew that it was a 'winner takes all scenario' - and it was West Calder who took the lead, only to be pegged back immediately by Woodlands.  However, the teams were only level for a matter of minutes as the West Lothian side stamped their authority on the match and ran out 3-1 winners to take the match and the title.  Both teams, as winners and runners up, now qualify for the SFA/SDS National League Finals day, providing the opportunity to test themselves against teams from across the country.

SFA School League Fixture 3 - Albyn Park, West Lothian.

SFA School League Fixture 3 - Albyn Park, West Lothian.

The third league fixture of the season was hosted by Broxburn United at Albyn Park, West Lothian and the sun shone throughout for the three teams in attendance.  Unfortunately, Cedarbank were unable to attend the fixture due to staffing issues which left three teams to battle it out for top spot of the league - particularly between West Calder HS and Woodlands.

Pilrig Park/Drummond were unfortunate to continue their losing run and they should be pleased with their performance over the two fixtures with both Woodlands and West Calder taking well into the last third of the match before finally breaking them down and wining 3-0 and 5-0 respectively.  The race for the title is firmly between West Calder and Woodlands, and this fixture was no different with the two teams battling out a hard fought 1-1 draw.  West Calder dominating the possession throughout and equalising near the death after falling behind to an early Woodlands goal.

The last fixture of the season is scheduled for Friday 15th May at Albyn Park, West Lothian - 1.30pm kick off.  Please feel free to come and support the boys on the final match day of the school year.

SDS/SFA National 5-a-side Championships

SDS/SFA National 5-a-side Championships

Wednesday 22nd April  - Glasgow Green, Glasgow.

Glasgow Green played host to the annual SDS/SFA National 5-a-side Championships for players with a learning impairment on Wednesday 22nd April.  The weather was in stark contrast from the previous year, with splitting sunshine throughout the entire day which made for ideal playing conditions for the impressive number of teams and players on show.

Lothian were able to enter two Junior teams due to the excellent turn out at the March Regional event which acted as a selection day.  Both Lothian teams were placed in the A Division of the Junior competition along with strong teams from Highland and Fife - each team performing well in the group stage of the competition and successfully navigating their passage into the semi final where they were unfortunately drawn together.  After a well matched start to the game, it was the young men from Lothian 'B' who stamped their authority on the match, going on to claim a convincing victory and therefore reaching the final, where they would meet Buchanan of Highland.  The final captured the day as a whole, with some extremely exciting, free flowing football being played.  Lothian 'B' twice came from behind with goals from youngster Dylan Band-Borthwick (Donaldson's) and a stunning long range strike from Stephen Pricthard (Woodlands) to level the scores at 2-2.  However, despite the goalmouth heroics from  Woodlands' David Jenkinson, the team from the north of Scotland claimed the victory and the gold medal with a goal in the dying seconds of the match. A great effort from all the boys involved, in terms of the level of football played and the manner in which they represented the region.  All players are listed below -

Lothian 'A'       Lothian 'B'
Dan Fletcher (West Calder) David Jenkinson (Woodlands)
Declan Murray (Woodlands) Adam Smith (Cedarbank)
Andrew Imrie (Kaimes) Ryan Nimmo (West Calder)
David Anderson (Kaimes)   Brandon McCusker (Cedarbank)
Jack Cruickshank (West Calder)

Dylan Band-Borthwick (Donaldson's)

Stephen Prictchard (Woodlands)

Thanks is extended to all the teachers and support staff who worked hard prior and during the event to enable the young people the opportunity to represent the Lothian Branch.

Lothian Schools 5-a-side Football Festival & Competition

Lothian Schools 5-a-side Football Festival and Competition

Thursday 5th March 2015

The annual Lothian 5-a-side festival for secondary aged pupils with a learning disability saw a change of venue from previous years, as Portobello Powerleague played host for the first time.  The last minute change of venue was embraced by all nine schools entered, with representation from all four local authorities which is again very pleasing.

The format of the event remained the same, with six skill stations delivered in the morning session allowing the young people to perfect their passing, dribbling and shooting techniques before putting this into practice after lunch.  These sessions were delivered by coaches and volunteers from Street Soccer and the SFA, proving a huge hit with the majority of the young people in attendance on the day.  The close partnership working and hard work of Street Soccer and the SFA is crucial to these events, providing the platform for the school pupils to enhance their skills and participate against their peers from across the region.

Lothian Schools Kick Off this Year's Football Participatory Event

Football Participatory Event - Lothian School Calendar of Events

Wednesday 26th November 2014 - Heriott Watt University, Edinburgh

Heriott Watt University Astrodome welcomed a host of young people from Schools across the region to kick off this year's Lothian Football Participatory Event on Wednesday 26th November.

Young People travelled from all four local authorities to continue the impressive attendance over the previous few years, with coaches from the Scottish FA and Street Soccer leading and delivering six skill stations in passing, shooting, dribbling and control.  This was followed up by small sided games with the primary aged teams from Prospect Bank and Kames (both Edinburgh) experiencing the event for the first time, while the slightly more experienced and older pupils from Woodlands (Edinburgh), Musselburgh Grammar (East Lothian) and Cedarbank (West Lothian) battled it out in the Secondary category.  There was also representation from Drummond CHS (Edinburgh) and Saltersgate (Midlothian), taking the number of young people to over 90.

Thanks is extended to the coaches from the SFA and Street Soccer and also Heriott Watt University for providing an ideal venue for the young people to develop their skills.  Links with the Heriott Watt Sports Union were also established, as they provided volunteers to assist with the event and this is an area the organisers will look to strengthen for next year.  Special thank you to Scott Montgomery, Active Schools Co-ordinator for Midlothian, for organising the event.

Hope to see you all next year and thanks again for your continued support.
