Schools Boccia Festival Right on Target

Edinburgh’s Jack Kane Centre provided the venue for this year’s Lothian Schools Boccia Festival, welcoming 78 young people from across the Lothian region.  The primary and secondary aged pupils were given the opportunity to try the sport in a friendly, non competitive environment as they participated in six skill stations that were tailored to introduce new skills and techniques.  Boccia is a precision target game that requires individuals or teams to score points by propelling their coloured balls onto the court and position them closer to the jack ball than their opponents.  Boccia became a Paralympic sport in 1984 and a host of players from Scotland are aiming to represent Great Britain in Rio later this year.

This year’s event saw Edinburgh Active Schools and Lothian Disability Sport (LDS) take the lead after the previous two festivals were planned, co-ordinated and delivered by the Edinburgh Leisure Sport and Physical Activity Development Team.  Event organisers Jill Coleman (Active Schools Co-ordinator, Disability & Inclusion) and Neal Herbert (LDS Disability Sport Co-ordinator) called upon the services from a whole host of partners to ensure the smooth running of the festival, with support from Edinburgh College, Lothian Disability Sport, Edinburgh Active Schools and Portobello HS imperative in achieving this.  A special mention to the staff from Edinburgh Leisure who were out in force to support the event and provided much of the delivery on the day.

The event helped produce many smiling faces throughout and seemed to be a hit with the young people and staff alike, with one teacher highlighting ‘our youngsters had a great day and I was very impressed with the input and support provided from the senior pupils from Portobello HS’.  Jill Coleman stated ‘this was a great event to be part of, it was fantastic to see such a large turn out and the genuine enthusiasm for Boccia from both those new to the sport and those with previous experience’.

The Lothian region offers a range of opportunities in the sport of Boccia with active sessions being delivered across all four local authorities in the region.  If you are interested in any local Boccia opportunities, please contact Neal Herbert on 0131 475 2364 or This email address is being protected from spambots.
