Scottish Disability Sport Lawn Bowls Championships
Saturday 5th September 2015 - Westburn Park, Aberdeen.
Lothian experienced mixed success at Saturday's Scottish Disability Sport Lawn Bowls Championships in Aberdeen. The annual event saw a team of 10 Lothian bowlers travel to Westburn Park aiming for more positive results than the same time last year.
Within the Learning Disability section, West Lothian bowlers Gordon Graham, Gillian Donald and Jacqueline Vickers were knocked out at the first stage of the competition, while Amanda Craig and John McMillan went one stage further. Christina McSherry (also West Lothian) performed well on the day, carrying on her fine form from the Inter Area event last month - however was defeated in the third round on this occassion. Ronnie McLintock (Edinburgh) and Raymond Brumby (Midlothian) narrowly missed out on a semi final place in the male learning disability section, with the latter player losing out by one shot.
It was across the Physical Disability section that the branch received more contrasting fortunes as Bob Sinclair (Sections 2&3 - Wheelchair Users) was unfortunate to come up against some very strong opponents and lose all three group ties. However, Richard Morrison (Section 6/7 - Ambulant, Restricted) rescued the region's reputation by claiming the title in slightly controversial fashion. The Craigentinny bowler successfully progressed through the group stages, meeting Grampian bowler Ali Burt in the final. Burt had already defeated Morrison in the group stages and after a close match the hooter sounded at 5-3, with the Edinburgh bowler thinking he had claimed victory. However, as the last jack had been played, the end had to be completed. With one bowl to play and with Burt lying one shot - the Grampian bowler sent the final bowl up and knocked his lying bowl away which resulted in Richard Morrison claiming victory by 2 shots. A dramatic end to the day for the Lothian contingent.
Many thanks to all players and staff who travelled to Aberdeen on behalf of Lothian. Furthermore, thank you to Scottish Disability Sport and Westburn Park for facilitating the championships and providing the players another opportunity to play bowls.
