The sun has been shining on disability bowls in Lothian this year as both the recent LDS Lawn Bowls Championships and the SDS National Lawn Bowls Championships were played in almost perfect weather conditions. The LDS event, held this year on 20th August, is used to select the team to represent Lothian at the national championships but this year we were delighted to welcome bowlers from other parts of the country including Perth & Kinross, Fife and the Borders. This gave our local bowlers the opportunity to test their game against some different opposition as well as making it a really sociable event. We are also indebted to the host club, Longniddry Bowling Club, for their support of this competition which contributes so much to its success. Their hospitality is second to none and, as well as allowing us the use of their green, club members helped to mark ties, provided tea and coffee throughout the day and generally made everyone very welcome.
After some fiercely contested games the final results were as follows :
Wheelchair section winner Steven Key (P&K) runner up Bob Sinclair (Lothian)
Ambulant men (non restricted) winner Gary Clelland (Lothian) runner up Daniel Porter (Borders)
Ambulant men& ladies (restricted) winner Mary Wilson (Fife) runner up Richard Morrison (Lothian)
Less than two weeks later the Lothian team travelled to Aberdeen on 2nd September for the SDS National Lawn Bowls Championships. Sadly, as the result of number of call offs, the team competing on the day was one of the smallest in recent memory with only nine Lothian bowlers taking part :
The early start took its toll on some of the team as several were knocked out in their first round matches but we were delighted when three of our bowlers Amanda Craig, Carole Martin and Richard Morrison, made it to the final of their section. Sadly Richard and Amanda were both narrowly defeated but Carole played exceptionally well to win the Sandy Fraser Memorial Trophy. Congratulations to all three finalists and thanks to the support team that travelled with the bowlers – Helen, Agnes, Freda, Elma and Eric – for helping make the day such a success.
