Hello, my name is Gary Fraser and I am the Sport Development Coordinator for Lothian Disability Sport (LDS). Lothian Disability Sport is a voluntary organisation and branch of Scottish Disability Sport. We aim to assist people with a disability to achieve their sporting ambitions by providing opportunities to participate in sport in a safe and secure environment. Our sessions, affiliated clubs and activities cater for a range of interests, ages and severity of disability as well as providing the opportunity to take part for fun or to compete at regional and national level. One of the challenges we face is how we can encourage participation among the masses. Not only is this essential to contribute towards a healthy lifestyle but in the case of disability sport it is also about raising awareness, education and ultimately giving people with a disability a positive experience of sport and physical activity.
I graduated from the University of Stirling in 2005 with a B.A (Hons) Degree in Sports Studies before moving to Edinburgh to work in a Managerial role at a Leisure Centre. Having enjoyed this for a year and a half, making the move into Sports Development was my real ambition. The opportunity to work with LDS is a real honour for me and I hope to take forward the successes of the organisation to date. I feel Disability Sport within Lothian has great potential and I look forward to working with the Local Authorities, professionals, coaches, athletes, volunteers and clubs within the area, in order to maximise this potential.
